One of the exciting things I've been doing lately is starting my own web
design business. The first thing I did was attend a small business workshop at Street
Ryan in Darwin. This was invaluable to me and I really appreciated the information
that was provided in the workshop.
Funnily enough, my brother, Jim, works for Street Ryan in Melbourne. I guess
that's why I had such confidence that the workshop would be worth attending.
I'd been to a seminar on intellectual property so I wanted to come up with a business
name that I could trademark. I also wanted to be able to get the domain name.
My mother calls me Kate or Katy when she's happy with me (Katherine when she's not!) so I
came up with a variation - Kayte. I pronounce it Kate, but several people have
pronounced it Katy, so I guess I managed to get both versions in there.
Once I had the business name registered it was all a matter of getting the rest
organised - the business plan, the website, the marketing material etc. There's a
lot involved. I've finally managed to get the website together, hosting organised,
and so on. I've built a couple of client sites in the NT and am hoping to continue
this work in Melbourne.
Anyway, it's a lot of fun and it's paying for my laptop. Ok, the real reason for
starting the business was so that I could buy myself a laptop! I admit it. But
it's still a lot of fun. And I've learned heaps about web design. In fact,
I've collected some good links on the topic.
I don't have them on my business site though - don't want people to come there and
decide that they no longer need my invaluable advice. :)
Oh, by the way, if my fairy godmother is reading this, can you please wave your magic
wand and do my books for me? I'd really appreciate it.
